“MidCat”, the Midi-Catalunya pipeline, is a highly controversial gas infrastructure project between France and Spain. Energy corporations Enagás and Teréga have been promoting its construction since 2005, and in 2013 the European Commission added the project to its PCI list (Projects of Common Interest).
Companies present this mega-project, worth €3.1 billion, as a necessary infrastructure to improve Europe’s energy security and to fight against climate change. However, these arguments could not be more wrong and voluntarily misleading.
In the new report ‘MythCat’, Friends of the Earth Europe, together with Les Amis de la Terre France, Ecologistas en Acción and ODG, have collected evidence and academic studies demystifying this gas project. The report clearly shows that MidCat (and its segment STEP) is just another fossil fuel project that the gas industry is trying to heavily greenwash to receive acceptance, attract public subsidies and other financial support. The list of arguments used to promote the project appears to be a big bubble of myths which is being bursted by a growing mobilisation of groups of concerned citizens, NGOs and deputies from both sides of the Pyrenees.
