As the first Conference on Transition Away from Fossil Fuels is about to start, Milieudefensie/Friends of the Earth Netherlands and World’s Youth for Climate Justice launch a new report building the case for corporate climate accountability in a just phase-out of of fossil fuels.
This report, supported by Friends of the Earth Europe, shows why companies are required to reduce their emissions and why governments need to keep those companies in check through international regulation.
First Conference on Transition Away from Fossil Fuels
Also called the Santa Marta Conference, this gathering must mark the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era. March 2026 was Europe’s second-warmest March on record and the fourth-warmest on record worldwide. As the climate crisis is accelerating, the Conference will be a key moment to act globally for climate action. The recent wars and global geopolitical tensions have exposed the continent’s dangerous dependence on dirty fossil fuels – a dependence that not only fuels the climate crisis, wars and authoritarian regimes, but also drives millions into energy poverty. While people see they energy bills skyrocket and bear the brunt of the cost of living crisis, fossil fuel multinationals are profiteering from war, lining their pockets with billions.
