Catarina works at Coopérnico, an energy cooperative. Members of the energy cooperative invest in solar plants to obtain locally produced energy that is coming from an infinite and abundant source: the sun. Coopérnico produces energy from solar plants installed on the rooftops of charitable organisations, which in turn consume the energy they produce.

Beyond providing an alternative energy source to their members, Coopérnico informs, enables and empowers people to become independent energy consumers, who in turn are enabled to take an active part in the energy system. By doing so, the cooperative shows us what a sustainable and equitable energy system could look like. Whether they are only consuming or also producing energy, it helps to create a different energy system that is not based on profit. When consumers have a good understanding of how and where their energy is produced, they become more invested and are enabled to take charge of their energy use, as well as manage their bills better.

What is needed for change?

Enabling and empowering people to become independent energy users by making it easier for people to access and interact with energy producers who offer locally sourced, affordable renewable energy.
