Leszek lives in Rybnik, in one of Europe’s largest coal-mining regions. Leszek’s family applied for the Clean Air subsidy scheme as they lived in an old home that was impossible to keep comfortable. This programme aims to reduce energy consumption and levels of air pollution by supporting renovations and heat source replacements in single-family homes.

They qualified for a fully subsidised renovation, meaning that all costs would be covered, and they did not have to struggle with any of the upfront costs either. This made the renovation accessible to them, enabling them to improve their quality of life in- and outside of the home.

Nowadays their house has insulated walls, sealed windows and doors, and an electric heat pump. They enjoy the full benefits of an insulated and decarbonised home and describe the difference in experiencing their home as heavenly. The Leszek family has reduced their energy consumption, as the house retains the heat, and have experienced a significant improvement in their indoor air quality.

What is needed for change?

Fully subsidised renovations and decarbonisation of the heating system for those who need them most. Renovations require significant upfront investments. Loan schemes and financing mechanisms based on reimbursements, have proven inaccessible to energy poor households. This group needs fully subsidised renovations with tailored funding programmes to make home improvements based on energy efficiency a reality.
