Amid record-breaking deforestation, rampant fires and increased attacks against indigenous people in Brazil, the European commission is still pushing for the ratification of the EU-Mercosur trade deal. Recent reports have shown that deforestation rates are even higher than previous year. The commission is trying to save the deal by fixing it with environmental protocols, but this is not sufficient to tackle structural problems related to the deal.
Recent reports and developments once again underline that any additional statement or declaration on environment and human rights between the EU and Mercosur countries will fail to address the serious problems of deforestation, climate crisis and serious human rights set-backs in Brazil.
In this letter to EU decision makers, Seattle to Brussels Network (S2B) and Friends of the Earth Europe call on EU member states not to approve the deal, with or without additional declarations.
