Our campaign for the 2024 European Parliament elections.
Friends of the Earth Europe has always worked to bring citizens closer to European politics: shedding light at the labyrinth of EU politics and explaining its potential impact. In light of the political climate in the past months, we decided that our 2024 European Parliament elections campaign would focus on t compassionate, clear and bold communications about the socially fair transition we need and envision.
The mandate of the 2024-2029 European Parliament and Commission comes at a crucial period for humanity. Every single policy decision need to put people, environment, and climate first if we are to bring our societies within sustainable limits. To achieve system change, vested interests in the status quo – from fossil fuel companies, agribusiness, or the current trade regime – cannot be allowed to continue shaping the agenda. Find the backbone of our campaign, the manifesto with our demands for the EU here.
With the rise of populism and the far-right, the 2024 EP elections also risk becoming an arena where climate action is instrumentalised in ways that lead to increased polarisation. To bridge this polarisation, we want to emphasisevalues such as solidarity, fairness, care for nature, and make a clear link between social and climate justice.
We collected research on narratives and other top tips on communications around the elections in this conversation guide.
Our experience shows us that EP elections are perceived, first and foremost, as national elections and associated with national level challenges. Therefore, we made sure to embed campaigning in national contexts, and to foster ideas and tactics that have proven impactful on the ground.
Why we stand with dairy farmers protesting in Brussels today: We want the next EU Commission to steer the transition of our agricultural & food systems in a fair, just and climate-friendly way!#PeoplePlanet2024 pic.twitter.com/sHghnQvwmB

We included our network in the whole process of creating the campaign, which resulted in a highly adaptable visual identity and tagline, and various social media content like the “hot topics” highlighting the most relevant issues for our network members, or the “impact-o-meters” telling relatable stories of people power.
There is still time to make a difference! Some people decide to vote on election day. And they mostly listen to their peers, so we encourage YOU spread the word of socially fair transition, share the fact you vote(d) and use any parts of the campaign.
