Resource justice

Local people protest the Barroso Lithium mine, Portugal

Europe needs to slash resource use.

Our growth-obsessed economic model relies on extracting ever-more resources from a finite planet, leading to environmental degradation, conflict and social inequality.

Europe consumes a disproportionate amount of global resources, and is more dependent on imported resources than any other region in the world.

Many imports come from poorer, lower-consuming countries in the Global South, where demand from rich regions like Europe sees corporations grab land from communities for mega-farms, mineral and metal mines and fossil-fuel extraction.

This is in large part because of the legacy of colonialism, which produced the power imbalance and inequalities between rich countries in the Global North and poorer ones in the Global South.

Friends of the Earth Europe campaigns for resource justice. We need Europe’s resource use to be measured, and to dramatically reduce our consumption levels
