Stop the EU-Mercosur trade deal
The EU is close to finalising a climate-wrecking trade deal with Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay – known collectively as Mercosur. But there’s still time to stop it.
The corporate-friendly deal would have dire consequences in both South America and beyond. If ratified, the deal would greatly undermine the Paris climate agreement and would lead to:
- More fires and deforestation in the Amazon
- Escalation of invasion of indigenous territories, land-grabbing and violent attacks
- Soaring greenhouse gas emissions
- A disruption of local food production in Mercosur countries
- Increased use of dangerous pesticides
- Worse food safety in Europe
The EU-Mercosur deal has been negotiated in full secrecy and opacity, without participation of civil society nor consultation of local communities and trade unions, and despite a wide mobilisation of citizens across Europe and Mercosur against the deal.
To enter into force, the deal must still be approved by the Council of the EU, the European Parliament and all parliaments of the Member States. They must reject a monstrous trade deal which would harm people, the climate and the environment.
