Sustainable resources management and sufficiency are the only cost-effective strategies to achieve climate goals and resource justice.
With the European Commissioner hearings coming up, Friends of the Earth Europe and partner organisations reached out to MEPs to point out a major blind spot of the new college of Commissioners and their mission letters: There is no mention of (absolute) resource use reduction nor sufficiency. The new European Commission is set to focus only on competitiveness and economic growth, an old-fashioned recipe which does not necessarily guarantee wellbeing for all.
In this briefing we explain why resource use reduction is crucial and suggest concrete actions MEPs can take. Not only should they address these topics during the hearings of Commissioner-designates, the new European Parliament also must use its historic opportunity to adopt a legislative initiative report (INL) on a Resource-wise Europe!
