There is land embodied in everything we consume – our food, our electronic devices, our clothes. With Europe having one of the highest consumption rates in the world, where are we getting all this land from and what impacts is it having on people and planet?
Europe’s land footprint is significantly larger than the continent itself, and our consumption is leading to devastating impacts, particularly outside of the continent. This is a political issue, yet the European Commission is doing nothing to counter our overconsumption of land, despite its promises. We need the EU to start measuring its land footprint and set reduction targets. This starts with the launch of the Land as a Resource Communication in 2016.
