The documentary follows the efforts of native people from Madagascar to protect their island from tar sands oil development. They travel to Canada to learn first-hand about the impacts of tar sands, and show these images in their home villages. The film captures their visit to Europe to ask for support from European politicians working on the EU’s Fuel Quality Directive – a policy that could either give a green or red light to tar sands development – and learn about the efforts of the oil industry and Canadian government to influence the policy process.
Tar sands oil is the most devastating fuel in commercial production today, producing three to five times more climate changing emissions than conventional fossil fuels. The pollution and deforestation from tar sands does irreversible ecological damage, kills wildlife and threatens indigenous communities. The global development of tar sands will magnify the climate crisis, damage the environment and hinder development objectives.
