Brussels – November 6, 2024: Business associations, including Business Europe and AmCham EU, have published a letter in which they call for weakening the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) approved in July 2024.
Alban Grosdidier, corporate accountability campaigner at Friends of the Earth Europe comments:
“Giant industries like oil and gas, chemicals and their lobby groups are misusing the competitiveness argument to weaken, delay or get rid of environmental, climate or human rights obligations. Their demands are ludicrous: triggering an impact review for a legal instrument years before it even comes into effect, and further delaying implementation despite the industry already having three years to prepare. CS3D didn’t appear out of thin air: catastrophes like Brumadinho or Rana Plaza, with hundreds or even thousands of victims, have littered the history of multinational companies’ operations. Meanwhile they wash their hands and rake in astronomical profits. It’s past time to hold them accountable.”
