Laws protecting amazing European wildlife are under threat – tell the EU not to weaken these laws
At over 468,000 and counting, record-breaking numbers of people around Europe are telling the EU Commission to save European nature laws.
There are just hours left to make our voices heard – before the EU Commission closes its public consultation on the matter at midnight this Sunday July 26.
European laws currently protect Europe’s most incredible natural places and wildlife – the Friedergries forest park in Bavaria, the Lee Valley in London and the other unique spots pictured below are great examples.
But now there is a very real threat that these laws – known as the Birds and Habitats Directives – could be watered down by an EU Commission review happening right now.
For the final stages of this phase of the campaign, Friends of the Earth groups in Cyprus, Malta, Germany, Croatia, Hungary, the UK and the Czech Republic have collected testimonies from Europeans talking about nature they love.
From the Cypriot mountains and the islands of Malta to the rugged Alps, the sites collected in these testimonies are all protected by the Birds and Habitats Directives, along with over 27,000 other sites around Europe. These testimonies show why these nature sites are so precious, and why the laws that protect them must be preserved.
