The Finnish government has announced it will be preparing a climate bill – representing a huge step in the Friends of the Earth Finland Big Ask campaign.
The Ministry of Environment has published a preliminary survey on opportunities for a climate change act. It recommends a strong and comprehensive law to improve consistency in climate policy.
This was supported by the main newspaper in Finland, which published an editorial praising a climate change act.
The Finnish Big Ask campaign is preparing a model bill of its own, which will highlight the ideal structure and content of a strong and comprehensive act. Campaigners have alsobeen lobbying supportive MPs and staff of the relevant ministries to ensure their continued support and motivation.
To demonstrate widespread support for a strong act, the campaign has been collecting ‘faces for a strong climate change law’ on the streets of Helsinki and Tampere, with speech bubbles saying ‘Strong Climate Change Act now!’
Friends of the Earth Finland also visited the Annual General Meetings of two political parties – the Greens and the Social Democrats – and photographed several ministers and party officials showing their support.
Friends of the Earth Finland Finland is excited to see its hard work bearing fruit, and the Climate Change Bill making progress towards becoming reality.
