Banned here, shipped away
The EU has banned many pesticides due to their serious risks to human health and the environment. Rightly so. But EU-based companies are still allowed to produce these banned substances and export them to countries with weaker protections – poisoning farmers, water, nature and violating human rights all over the world.
Recent research from Public Eye and Unearthed revealed that in 2024 alone, the European Union exported over 120,000 tonnes of pesticides containing 75 active substances banned within the EU.
In 2020, the European Commission pledged to end this hypocrisy. Five years later, that promise has not been fulfilled.
Stop Toxic Trade
To expose this toxic double standard, communities across the world coordinated symbolic actions. Civil society and farmer organisations from 13 countries in 5 different continents recorded themselves packing bottles of these EU-banned pesticides into boxes destined to the European Commission.
Return to sender
On 2 December, ahead of the International No Pesticide Use Day, we will gather in Brussels to deliver 75 boxes – one for each banned pesticide Europe continues to export -to the European Commission.
