Deadline for applications: January 21th 2024
Based in: Friends of the Earth Europe, Brussels
Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) campaigns at the heart of Europe for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. We are the largest grassroots environmental network in Europe, uniting 32 national organisations with thousands of local groups as part of Friends of the Earth International. Our vision is of a peaceful and sustainable world, founded on social, economic, racial, gender and environmental justice and free from all forms of domination and exploitation.
We are looking for a Corporate Capture and Fossil Free Politics Campaigner who will work as a member of the Economic Justice team, for a period of 12 months (with the possibility of a permanent contract), starting in March 2024 based in the FoEE office in Brussels. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an environmental justice NGO working at the European level and a vibrant European network.
FoEE is campaigning to end corporate capture of decision-making processes. European and national policies are excessively influenced by large companies and their industry associations. In the climate and energy fields, companies have managed to stop, delay, and weaken climate rules for decades, preventing a fair and effective response to the climate crisis. Corporate capture is also at play in policy making in fields like food production, trade and investment, or access to raw materials. As a result, many new laws and policies are not reflecting the needs of society, the environment, or the climate but mainly benefit corporate interests. We work closely with the Fossil Free Politics coalition and will engage with or initiate similar coalitions related to other policy areas.
For this position we are looking for an organised, creative, energetic and motivated individual. You will be the primary campaigner on all issues regarding corporate capture, and will have a broad range of responsibilities, including developing positions and strategies, and implementing them by organising concrete activities and events. You will be working in coalitions, and involving groups at the national level in our campaign.
You will work closely together with colleagues in the Economic Justice program who are each responsible for one of the four areas of our team – (1) trade and investment, (2) corporate accountability, (3) corporate capture and fossil free politics, and (4) LNG in Mozambique. As part of your position, you will engage with colleagues in other FoEE programs working on energy, climate, food, agriculture, critical raw materials, etc. Your line-manager is the coordinator of the Economic Justice team.
Key responsibilities:
- Contribute to developing strategies for the Fossil Free Politics campaign;
- Develop strategies for corporate capture work in other policy areas, such as food and agriculture, raw materials, trade policies, etc:
- Develop and deliver activities, events and materials that contribute to campaign aims and strategies (examples of activities: stunts, webinars, public debates, speakers tours, etc);
- Coordinate and/or develop research that highlights corporate capture and its negative impacts on society, including exposing potential conflicts of interests of candidate EU Commissioners;
- Advocate our key messages and proposals with relevant stakeholders at EU and national level, including the European Parliament and the Commission;
- Engage Friends of the Earth member groups and other organisations in our campaigns and develop alliances with key external groups;
- Develop, in cooperation with our Communications team, accessible communication tools (including social media) that allow for increased public involvement;
- Organise campaign meetings and contribute to EJ programme meetings;
- Manage administrative and finance matters related to the campaign and keep track of budget expenditures;
- Contribute to fundraising and reporting to funders;
- Develop good relations with media and be spokes-person on relevant topics;
- Contribute to the development of strategies of the Economic Justice program;
- Contribute to the development of the Friends of the Earth Europe organization (staff meetings, trainings, overall strategic prioritization, etc.).
Requirements for the role-holder:
- Strong commitment to, and passion to match, the values, vision, and mission of Friends of the Earth Europe;
- Experience in working with an NGO at national or European level;
- Experience in managing campaigns including the various responsibilities involved (such as fundraising and reporting, research, planning, lobbying, communications);
- Experience in dealing with stakeholders from different backgrounds: NGOs, FoEE member groups, activists and grassroots groups, global South partners, lobbyists, researchers, media, influencers, politicians, etc.;
- Experience in managing, planning and delivering projects, events and bigger activities, including proven ability to adjust plans to rapidly changing circumstances;
- Track-record of activities that show an understanding of economic justice and corporate capture issues;
- Knowledge of how EU institutions and policy making work;
- Good oral and written communication skills in English;
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
- Motivation to exchange with and learn from colleagues;
- Ability to think out of the box and find new ways to campaign;
- Ability to attend evening/weekend meetings and undertake travel.
