Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) campaigns at the heart of Europe for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. We are the largest grassroots environmental network in Europe, uniting 32 national organisations with thousands of local groups as part of Friends of the Earth International. Our vision is of a peaceful and sustainable world, founded on social, economic, racial, gender and environmental justice and free from all forms of domination and exploitation.
We are looking for an intern who will work as part of the climate justice and energy team, for a period of 6 months, starting March 2024 and based in the FoEE office in Brussels. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an environmental justice NGO working at the European level and a vibrant European network.

If successful you will support the Climate Justice and Energy (CJE) team work to achieve a just transition to a people cantered 100% renewable, super energy-efficient, zero-fossil-fuel Europe by 2030. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the work of the team, gain knowledge and experience in campaigning and organising, and to join one of the leading green NGOs in Brussels and to be part of a vibrant network of national member organisations. The CJE campaigns against the fossil fuel industry’s efforts to stop the phase out of fossil fuels, in particular gas, on massive renovation programs to cut our energy consumption and tackle energy poverty, and fighting to democratize the energy system and empower people to set in motion renewable initiatives in their communities. We campaign with FoE Europe member groups, both inside and outside the EU and work closely with allies in Brussels and at the national level. This post is expected to support the team’s work across all our campaigns.
Key responsibilities
- Support advocacy efforts targeting European decision-makers to achieve ambitious climate and energy policies, for social and climate justice;

- Support the coordination of NGO coalitions;
- Support the daily work of campaigns:
- Distribute relevant information to FoE member groups and the wider NGO network;
- Support producing creative and inspiring communications materials for the Friends of the Earth Europe website and social media;
Requirements for the role-holder
Essential:
- Strong commitment to, and passion to match, the values, vision, and mission of Friends of the Earth Europe;
- Strong interest in environmental justice issues, ideally through an experience as social/environmental activist or within an NGO
- Strong organisational and time management skills;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
- Motivation to exchange with and learn from colleagues;
- Flexibility and ability to face unexpected situations;
- IT literacy (Microsoft Office/Excel – graphic design and video editing skills are a plus).
Desirable:
- Knowledge and/or experience of the European institutions;
- Knowledge of an EU language other than English;
- Be able to travel occasionally within Europe
What we offer
The position is offered as a full-time position in Brussels, Belgium for a period of 6 months with the possibility to extend it to 9 months. It can be made permanent, subject to satisfactory performance and available funding.
We offer a salary of 1.108€ per month for the full-time post.
FoEE offers an attractive benefits package, including a 13th month salary, lunch vouchers, an additional 5 days of holidays per year, pension scheme, hospitalisation and comprehensive travel insurance. We also offer full coverage of train travel in case of commuting within Belgium. FoEE offers a motivating working environment in an international office located in an environmentally-friendly NGO building.
To carry out the job, the team member must be based in Belgium. The job is subject to FoEE’s teleworking policy, which allows for hybrid working.
