In October, the European Commission will adopt its work programme for 2023. Friends of the Earth Europe joined over 20 civil society organisations in sending a letter to the Commission’s President von der Leyen, Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans, Commissioners Stella Kyriakides, Janusz Wojciechowski and Virginijus Sinkevi?ius, calling upon them to ensure ensure that the legislative framework for Sustainable Food Systems (FSFS) features prominently on the list of initiatives announced for next year. It will be the last one before the European elections in 2024.
As food and agriculture were mostly absent from the State of the Union speech that Ursula von der Leyen gave on 14 September 2022, we urge the Commission to remain strong in the face of growing (geo)political pressures and attacks on the Farm to Fork Strategy, to prioritise access to healthy and sustainable food and to come forward with the FSFS, the Strategy’s flagship initiative, as planned for 2023.
