The new corporate capture that threatens democracy and the environment
The European Commission has increasingly been turning to alliances with big business to ‘get them on board’ with meeting European Green Deal objectives. In reality, the alliances are another opportunity for industry to unduly influence political processes and direct public spending.
Our unique analysis finds DG GROW’s industrial alliances are the latest idea to give industry the reins in its own regulation, which inevitably leads to outcomes that are weak, voluntary, and/or twisted towards the financial interests of the businesses concerned; this kind of corporate capture has no place in a democratic, transparent EU, capable of tacking the climate, biodiversity and related crises.
